For founders and CEOs

You don't need a product department. You need the decisions made.

Seed to Series B, usually eight to forty people, with a founder who is still running product and a team that could move faster if someone said what mattered.

Sound familiar?

  • You're the founder and you're still the product team

Every decision routes through you, the roadmap lives in your head, and the team waits. It worked at five people. It doesn’t at twenty.

  • Engineering ships, but nothing moves

The team is busy and the release notes are long. Revenue, retention and the metrics you told investors about haven’t budged. Activity has replaced direction.

  • Nobody owns the product decisions, so engineering makes them by default

Not because they want to, but because the seat is empty. When they push back on a request you can’t tell whether it’s technical reality, preference, or an experiment worth running.

  • AI is on the roadmap and nobody knows where it goes

The board wants an AI story. Your engineers are using coding agents. The specs they’re working from were thin before; now the wrong product gets built faster.

Where founders usually start

    Personal review

    £195 + VAT

Send me your roadmap; my written read on it within three working days. Credited in full against anything that follows.

  2. If the roadmap is the problem

    Roadmap Reset

    From £8,000, two weeks

The roadmap cut to a small set of outcomes the whole team can defend, with a readout for the board.

  3. If you need the seat filled

    Fractional Head of Product

    From £5,000/month

One or two days a week, embedded with the team, for as long as it's useful.

Who this is for

A founder, CEO or PE operator running a revenue-generating software business with roughly five to thirty engineers, where growth has slowed and it isn't obvious whether the problem is the people, the plan or the decisions.

Who it isn't for, yet

An idea and two freelance developers. You don't need this and shouldn't pay for it. Take the free assessment, read the articles, and come back when there's a team and customers.

Questions people ask

When should a startup hire its first Head of Product?
Usually later than founders think for a full-time hire, and earlier than they think for senior help. If you have more than about eight engineers and the founder is still the only person setting direction, you’re past the point. A fractional lead bridges the gap without a £120k+ salary and a four-month search.
Fractional, interim or full-time?
Fractional (one or two days a week, ongoing) when you need senior judgement but not a full week of it. Interim (full-time, fixed term) when a leader has left and the seat can’t sit empty. Full-time when the product org is big enough to need a manager every day. I do the first two and will tell you when you need the third.
What does a fractional Head of Product cost in the UK?
Mine is From £5,000/month for one day a week, with a three-month minimum. Sprints are fixed-price from £8,000. All prices are published on the pricing page.
Will you work with our engineers directly?
Yes. That’s most of the job. I read code, so trade-offs don’t get lost between the business and the build.
